Persian Ghoochan Rugs

Persian Ghoochan rugs can look very much like Caucasian Rugs and others can be mistaken for Baluch Rugs. Ghoochan, Quchan or Ghouchan rug is an important collection point for Kurdish and Afshar tribal and also village rugs. The rugs share designs with Northwest and Caucasian Kurdish Rugs and Afshar.
Quchan rugs and carpets usually have geometric patterns. There are lots of similarity with other Kurdish rugs from the east of Iran. There also should be considering the influence of Turkmen rugs in Quchan rugs and carpet patterns.

The quality of Quchan rugs and carpets are good. The main colors are dark burgundy, indigo, ivory and also light green. Warps are mostly cotton and the wefts are either cotton or wool. Hence the weavers in Quchan use both Persian and Turkish knots, inspection of the back of the carpet is important. The numbers of knots vary, depending on the quality of the carpet. It usually averages around 120 KPSI (30 RAJ).

 Where is Ghoochan?

Ghoochan (Persian: قوچان‎‎ Qučān  pronounced [quˈtʃɑːn, ɢoˈtʃɒːn]; Also known as Gochan) is a city in and capital of Quchan County, in Razavi Khorasan Province, Iran. It has an elevation of 1,149 meters above sea level north of the Shah Jahan Mountains. You can find it on the map, south of the border of Turkmenistan. There is also a road connecting Quchan to Mashhad, 125 km southeast and Turkmenistan, 100 km north. At the 2006 census, its population was 96,953, in 25,066 families consisting of mostly Kurds, Persians, and Turks. Due to existence of Hezar Masjed, Aladagh and Shah Jahan heights,  the climate is almost moderate in summer and cold in winter.

Historical Events

In medieval ages, Choochan was famous as “Khabooshan” and “Khoojan” . They build the city again in the time of Holakookhan. “Shah Abbas The First” transferred Kord warriors to this region for preventing Ozbaks and Turkmen attacks. In the year 1791 AD., his troop killed Nader Shah in “Tapeh Nader” (Nader’s hill) close to this city. Its historical sites mostly belong to 12th century AD. Important natural, historical and religious monuments of this city are as follows: Ghoochan Gheshmeh Garmab, Abadeh and Bardeh Caves and also Recreational areas around the city.
Quchan suffers from many earthquakes. Due to this fact, the town was relocated about 10 km east of the original town in 1895 since the last one.
